Until recently this was a straightforward comparison: two competing assistants, pick one. Two changes in 2026 broke that framing, and both of them cause genuine confusion in the conversations we have with clients.
Change one: they both have a "Cowork" now
This is the one that catches everybody, including people who follow the industry closely.
Copilot Cowork is Microsoft's, generally available worldwide since June 2026. You define a task, it plans and executes and hands back a finished deliverable rather than a draft.
Claude Cowork is Anthropic's, a separate product. You give it an outcome, it splits the project into chunks and works through them, coming back when it needs a decision. You approve the plan first, or let it run end to end once you trust it.
Same word, two vendors, two products. If someone in your business says "we should look at Cowork", the first question is whose. We have seen more than one meeting go twenty minutes before anyone noticed the two sides were discussing different software.
Change two: Claude runs inside Copilot Chat
Since July 2026, Claude is available as a model option in Copilot Chat, for complex analysis, document understanding and structured content generation.
So the question is no longer purely "which do we buy". If you have Microsoft 365 Copilot, you can already reach Claude's reasoning inside the place your work lives. For a lot of businesses that removes the need for a second subscription entirely.
What it does not do is make them the same product. Choosing a different model changes the reasoning behind an answer. It does not change what Copilot can see, what it is permitted to do, or which of your business systems it is connected to. That is where the real difference still sits.
The honest split
We have put it the same way for two years and it has survived both changes: Copilot is where your work lives. Claude is where the hard thinking goes.
| The job | Reach for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Email, meetings, documents | Copilot | It is already inside Outlook, Teams and Office and can see the thread, the meeting and the file. Nothing else has that access. |
| Finding answers in your own SharePoint | Copilot | Grounded in your tenant, and on by default for licensed users since June 2026. |
| Reading something long and difficult | Claude | Holds a lot of material at once without losing the thread. Now reachable inside Copilot Chat too. |
| Writing that has to be right | Claude | A measured tone that suits high-stakes work, where a confident-sounding mistake would cost you. |
| Finance and back-office admin | Claude | The Small Business plugin connects QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot, Canva and Docusign, and ships prebuilt workflows for payroll planning, month-end close and weekly briefs. |
| Handing over a whole multi-step job | Either | Both have an agentic mode now. Use whichever one is connected to the systems the job touches. |
What we actually recommend
If you run Microsoft 365 and nothing else: start with Copilot, and use the model picker in Copilot Chat when you hit something that needs harder reasoning. Do not buy a second subscription until someone can name the specific job it would do.
If your back office is the bottleneck: the Claude Small Business connectors are the stronger answer, because they reach into the finance and CRM systems where that work actually happens. This is the case where a second subscription earns its keep.
If you are a knowledge business: professional services, consulting, anything where the product is documents and advice, you will probably end up with both, and that is a reasonable outcome rather than a failure to decide.
In every case: one business plan rather than a scattering of personal accounts. That is the governance decision, and it matters more than the product choice.
The part people skip
Whichever you pick, the constraint is almost never the tool. In the rollouts we are called in to rescue, the licences were bought, the pilot went well, and then nothing changed, because nobody was ever taught what to do differently on a Tuesday morning.
A licence is not a skill. If you want the practical version, we have written nine lessons each for Claude and Copilot, free and without a signup, and both include the mistakes we watch people make first.
